Sitting at the most south-westerly point of Australia, the site is exposed to harsh winds blowing off the Indian and Southern Oceans. Dressing correctly makes the difference between an uncomfortable walk and an enjoyable visit. You also need to meet safety rules if you want to climb the 39-metre tower.
Do I need special shoes for the lighthouse climb?
Yes, enclosed footwear is mandatory if you plan to climb the lighthouse tower.
You cannot join the 30-minute guided tour wearing flip-flops, sandals, or bare feet. The climb involves 176 steep steps, and safety rules strictly require shoes that cover your entire foot. If you are only buying the Grounds & Museum Only Pass, footwear rules are more relaxed, but sturdy shoes are still recommended for walking the precinct.
What clothing is best for the weather at the cape?
A windproof jacket is the most important item to pack, no matter the month.
The viewing balcony at the top of the tower and the outdoor observation points are highly exposed. Even in summer, the coastal winds can be fierce and cold. In winter, bring extra warm layers, as temperatures drop and ocean storms roll in.

What to wear to Cape Leeuwin in summer?
Bring a wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap and apply plenty of sunscreen.
While you still need a jacket for the wind, summer brings strong UV levels. Standard hats easily blow away on the viewing balcony or at the Meeting of the Oceans Viewpoint. A hat with a secure strap is ideal. Sunscreen is essential as there is little shade on the grounds.
What items are banned inside the lighthouse?
Selfie sticks, camera stands, and tripods are not permitted.
You must leave these items in your car. The internal staircase and the top viewing balcony are narrow. Bulky photography equipment creates a hazard for other visitors and the guide. You can bring a standard camera or a smartphone.

What gear should I bring for whale watching?
Pack binoculars to spot whales between May and December.
During these months, Southern Right and Humpback whales pass close to the cape. The elevated position of the lighthouse grounds makes it an excellent vantage point. If you plan to combine your lighthouse visit with a nearby whale watching boat tour later in the day, consider bringing motion sickness tablets.

Is there anything else I need for the grounds?
A water bottle is useful, though there is a cafe on site.
Walking the Leeuwin Biddi Trail (3.1km one way) or exploring the Lightkeepers' Precinct takes time. Staying hydrated is important. You can easily spend over an hour on the grounds and the museum.
