About Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse
Constructed from hand-carved local tamala limestone, the lighthouse first opened in 1896. It stands 39 metres high, making it the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia. The beacon marks the exact point where the Indian and Southern Oceans collide.
Today, visitors can join a 30-minute guided tour of Climb the Tower. You will climb 176 steps to the viewing balcony. The site also features the historic Lightkeepers' Museum, which details the rugged lives of early maritime custodians.
The cape serves as the southern terminus for the famous 130km Cape to Cape hiking track. If you want to know the Best Visiting Times, plan for May to December when migrating whales pass by the coast.
