Families often visit the tallest lighthouse on mainland Australia. While toddlers cannot climb the tower for safety reasons, the surrounding precinct offers plenty for children to see. You can explore the historic cottages, spot whales from the grounds, and walk short parts of the Cape to Cape Track.

Can toddlers climb the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse?

No. Children under 4 years of age cannot climb the lighthouse tower.

This is a strict safety rule. The climb involves 176 steps up a spiralling internal staircase. If you have younger kids, an adult will need to stay on the ground with them while others climb the tower.

How much are kids' tickets for the lighthouse?

A guided tower tour for a child (aged 4 to 16) costs from $12.

If you prefer to stay on the ground, the Grounds & Museum Only Pass is from $3.50 for children in the same age bracket. Kids under 4 enter the precinct for free. Adult tickets are from $23 for the guided tour. Note that prices change based on booking platforms.

What can kids do in the Lightkeepers' Precinct?

The museum sits in an original lightkeepers' cottage. It features audio and visual displays detailing the rugged history of early custodians. This interactive centre is included in both the tower and grounds-only tickets.

Is it safe for children on the lighthouse grounds?

Yes, but the cape is extremely exposed and windy year-round.

You must keep a close eye on children near the coastal edges. Pack windproof jackets for the whole family. If you visit in summer, bring sunscreen and wide-brimmed hats with chin straps so the wind does not blow them away.

Can kids see whales from Cape Leeuwin?

Yes, the grounds offer an excellent vantage point for whale watching.

Between May and December, migrating whales pass by the cape. Bring binoculars so your kids can spot them from the Meeting of the Oceans Viewpoint. This makes the winter season highly recommended for wildlife sightings.

Are there family walks near the lighthouse?

You can walk short, flat sections of the nearby trails with kids.

The Cape to Cape Track starts here. You can take a short walk along the track to the historic Water Wheel. Alternatively, the Leeuwin Biddi Trail is a 3.1km shared path to Dead Finish, which is suitable for a scenic family stroll.
