Cape Leeuwin sits at the exposed point where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. The site remains open year-round. You need to dress properly for extreme winds on any day you choose to visit.

When is the whale watching season?

You will see whales migrating past the lighthouse from May to December.

The peak time for sightings is between May and August. You can spot Southern Right and Humpback whales from the Meeting of the Oceans Viewpoint. Bring binoculars to get a better look at the passing marine life.

What is the weather like in summer?

Summer brings warmer days and intense sun, but it remains very windy.

You will need sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat. Make sure your hat has a chin strap so the coastal wind does not blow it away. The clear skies provide excellent conditions for taking wide-angle photographs of the 39-meter (128-foot) limestone tower.

Is it worth visiting in winter?

Yes, winter is the best time for spotting whales, despite the cooler weather.

Temperatures drop and rain is more likely. You must bring warm layers and a windproof jacket. After climbing the 176 steps to the viewing balcony, you can warm up with a hot drink at the Lighthouse Café.

Are there times the lighthouse is closed?

The lighthouse precinct closes only on Christmas Day.

It is open daily throughout the rest of the year. If extreme weather conditions occur, access to the top balcony may be restricted for safety reasons. Always check local forecasts before your 40-minute drive down from Margaret River.

Morning tours often experience slightly calmer winds and smaller crowds.
